Summer is quickly coming to an end, and school will be starting before we know it. I hope everyone has had time to relax and enjoy having their children home over the last few months.
The first day of school for students is Tuesday, August 26th and will be a regular school day. School begins at 8:10 a.m. and is dismissed at 2:33 p.m. Students are asked not to arrive on school grounds prior to 7:55 a.m. Supervision cannot be provided prior to that time. This is a safety issue, to which we request parents adhere. There is school Tuesday the 26th through Thursday the 28th the first week. There is no school on Friday the 29th due to a teacher professional development day or on Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day.
On the first day of school, the students should report to the following areas as they exit their buses or get dropped off:
Grade 3 - Miller Cafetorium
Grade 4 & Grades 3 & 4 Montessori - Placentino Cafetorium
Grade 5 - Miller Gymnasium
The teachers' names and homeroom numbers will be posted for the children to find.
Miller School parents who transport students in the morning or afternoon should use the Central loop and the Miller loop for parent drop-off and pick-up. The bus loop is in the Placentino loop. Please do not leave your parked cars in our bus loops. To ensure the safety of every child, please drive with extreme caution and respect the stop signals and signs on our school buses. Remember that it is a state law that cars may not pass a school bus when the bus has its lights flashing.
“Live parking only” is allowed in the Miller front loop or center loop during morning arrival time. If you need to drop something off at school, please park in the Miller lower parking lot. Students who are being picked up or walking are dismissed to the Miller and Central loops. Students should not walk across or through the parking loops. We ask you to use the sidewalks with your children. There will be supervision on the sidewalk and in the bus area from 2:33-2:45 p.m. only.
Please note that parking in areas designated for “Handicapped Use” is not allowed unless you have Disabled Person plates or a Disabled Person Placard. Parking in areas that are marked as fire lanes is not permitted at any time. Our school police officers enforce these parking restrictions to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and visitors. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we try to make this process as safe and efficient as we can.
Back to School Nights are scheduled for the following dates:
Grade 3 & Grades 3 & 4 Montessori - Wednesday, September 3rd
Grade 4 & Grade 5 - Thursday, September 4th
Each evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the cafetorium and conclude at approximately 8:00 p.m. from your child's classroom. This will be an evening for parents to meet the classroom teacher and learn more about the curriculum and expectations for the year. If you have students in multiple grades at Miller, you need only attend one of the 6:30-7:00 introductions in the cafetorium. (Please note that the Grade 4 & Grade 5 Back to School Nights are on the same evening. If possible, please think about carpooling. Parking at the Adams Middle school may be necessary).
Fourth grade parents, mark your calendars for Tuesday evening, September 2nd at 6:30 for instrument distribution. (More information will follow when school starts).
This year school pictures are early. They will be taken on Tuesday, September 9th. Also on the evening of September 12th, HEPTSA will be hosting the elementary Back-to-School Picnic.
Please be aware that your child will be bringing home important notices on the first day of school. We ask that you review them carefully and send back any items that require your signature or response as soon as possible. The Parent/Student handbook will be available on the district website @ http://www.holliston.k12.ma.us/. The handbook contains important information in regards to school procedures.
The Miller School has a "Call Back System" for when your child is absent or tardy. If you know that your child will be absent or tardy, please call (508) 429-0667. When the voice mail greeting activates, press 3 and report your child's name, teacher, and state the reason for the absence or tardiness. If we do not receive a call, we will follow up with a phone call to your home.
The Miller School is “Nut Free.” This includes tree nuts and peanuts. As you are all aware, each year we have more and more students with life threatening allergies to nuts and peanuts. Because of this, it has been decided that all classes within the Miller School will be "Nut Free". Students may bring whatever they would like for lunch (note: lunch prices are 2.75 for lunch, including milk/milk cost .60 cents), but morning snacks and foods brought into the classroom for celebrations must be “nut-free.” This includes not only food with explicit tree nut and/or peanut ingredients, but also those foods that contain the warning “may be processed in a facility that manufactures tree nut/peanut products.” Additionally, we are continuing our practice of having all birthday celebrations food-free.
A list of 'Recommended Foods for Classroom Distribution' is located on the Miller School Home Page and the School Nurse' web page @http://www.holliston.k12.ma.us/miller/recommended%20food%20list.pdf
I look forward to seeing everyone on August 26th. Enjoy the remainder of the summer.
