Unified Arts

The elementary art program introduces and teaches age-appropriate art skills and allows students to be  exposed to a wide variety of art media that are used in the creation of  self-expressive projects. Children in grades 3-5 receive weekly Art instruction. The students experience the artistic process based on an exploration and exposure to art of the old masters and new contemporary artists. The program also encourages  experimentation with 2- dimensional and 3-dimensional forms of art.The curriculum is designed around state standards and the needs of individual students culturally and with respect to their skill levels.  Opportunities exist for students to collaborate and showcase their artwork in the community..  The program offers a variety of experiences that introduce creative expression, aesthetic awareness, and the development of visual perception.

Through activities in listening, performing and creating, all students at Miller are introduced to the musical concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, tone and expression and interpretation.

Physical education should be recognized as an integral part of a child's school education; it contributes to the development of the wholechild - physically, emotionally and cognitively. With a commitment to quality physical education and the development of the whole child, we are dedicated to providing your child with a variety of rich learning experiences, where they can acquire the knowledge and skills to be a lifelong mover. We believe the skills learned in physical education class will help nurture their self esteem and contribute to their academic, social, and emotional growth as well.

The purpose of  science education is to nurture natural curiosity and help students make meaning of the world around them.   The science program is correlated to the latest state standards, is based upon the principles of child interest and lends itself to activity-oriented teaching which is supported with classroom nonfiction readings.  Students will make observations, analyze data, test hypotheses, communicate findings and relate this to the real world that they are a part of.

The Foreign Language Spanish Program at Miller School is an integrated approach to the delivery of the elementary school curriculum through the development of Spanish language skills.  Lessons taught using the Spanish language serve to enhance the development of skills in all other curricular areas.  All students in grades 3-5, except those participating in the French Immersion Program, will receive Spanish instruction during the week.

Our state-of-the-art Media Center is an extension of the classroom, providing supplemental teaching aids that enrich and extend each child's learning. Children are encouraged to visit and use the Media Center to apply the reading and research skills they have learned in the classroom.  The Miller Media Center houses a centralized audio-visual collection of teacher resources, books and computers for student use, and parent resource materials. 

Miller School thanks the many parents who volunteer their time to keep our Media Center open daily from September to June.

The Digital Learning/STEM Curriculum is unique at Miller Elementary School. All students in grades 3-5 spend a semester in computer class and a semester in STEM/Engineering. They meet once a week for 50 minutes. In addition to this class, students experience digital learning in the classroom environment with a variety of mobile technology and digital tools including chromebooks and iPads. At Miller, we believe in setting a strong foundation of technology skills based on the Massachusetts Digital Learning and Computer Science standards for all our learners.

The curriculum at Miller spirals up through the grades and is constantly evolving to keep up with the latest in educational technology. The five basic units are the same in each grade with lessons that vary by skills appropriate for that grade.

The Engineering Units used at Miller School come from the Museum of Science Engineering is Elementary (EiE) program. The curriculum is designed to foster engineering and technology literacy. In STEM/Engineering class, students will learn to use the steps in the Engineering Design Process, ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve, to solve a specific problem.
