How to improve executive skills without the frustration. Executive skills are crucial for acquiring academic skills. More importantly, they are essential skills that students need to accomplish tasks. Brain-based skills, such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence, are vital for school success. While some students develop these skills naturally, many struggle with them. Dr. Peg Dawson, co-author of the books *Smart but Scattered* and *Smart but Scattered Teens*, will explain how these skills develop during childhood and suggest strategies parents can use to help their children acquire the necessary skills for success in school.

One feeling students will explore this month as part of our social emotional learning curriculum is aggravated. Lessons will include reading stories about characters who feel aggravated and identifying how they work through these feelings and role-playing scenarios, considering the following strategies that can help:
Thought strategies
• Visualize the place that puts you in the green.
• Engage in positive self-talk or repeat a mantra that addresses your response
(ex: “this is temporary,” “focus on yourself”).
• Plan around how to address or change the source of what is aggravating you.
Action strategies
• Take slow and steady, deep breaths.
• Take a walk or release energy through physical activity.
• Remove yourself from the situation.
• Engage in an activity that distracts you from the source of aggravation.
We will also be acknowledging and celebrating the following:
