Science learning September - October

Grade 3: Life Cycles Unit: In this unit, students compare and contrast the life cycles of both animals and plants.

Grade 4: Sound, Waves & Communication Unit: In this unit, students investigate the science of sound. Students construct physical devices to feel the vibrations that allow us to communicate across distances. Students also use digital devices to visualize the characteristics of different sound waves that cause us to hear different things.

Grade 5: Ecosystems & The Food Web: In this unit, students explore how consumers, producers, and decomposers each play an important role in ecosystems. They build models of food chains and food webs to investigate how matter and energy flow through these systems.

NED's Mindset Mission Assembly is visiting our school this week! NED and our students take a journey to find their positive mindset. The show is filled with storytelling, humor, illusions, and amazing yo-yo tricks where our kids learn the hidden message in NED's name:

Never give up - understand the Power of YET

Encourage others - spark courage in other people

Do your best - always be learning and growing

After the show, we will be selling yo-yos because a yo-yo is both a mindset tool and a tangible reminder of NED's message. While learning to yo-yo, children will make mistakes, try again, and improve.

Our school received this assembly at no-cost because another school paid-it-forward to us. We want to help pay-it-forward too, by selling NED-messaged yo-yos. Your child will bring home a flyer with more information about purchasing a yo-yo at lunch, but we need YOUR help to be able to sell yo-yos. Please consider signing up to help out during lunch between October 1 & 7, and see all the smiling faces as they get their own yo-yos!

*A current CORI is required to volunteer in school.*

In addition to our core values, CARE (cooperation, acceptance, respect and effort), we use the approach set by the RULER (Recognize, Understand, Label, Express and Regulate) program. In the beginning of the year, classes begin with two core routines; class charter and community circle. Both routines build relationships amongst peers and foster platforms to have community discussions where everyone's voice is valued, communication is strengthened and feelings are shared. Here are a few of our classroom charters!
